Taverna Penta was originally a stopping station for carriages passing along the ancient consular road of Calabrie, located 10 miles south of Salerno in the so-called Sele Plain. Mentioned as early as the 18th century maps, Taverna Penta was expanded by the ancestors of the current owner Filippo Morese in the second half of the 19th century with the construction of the second floor, which was also equipped with two circular turrets in the outer corners of the main facade. The open courtyard farmstead represents an “architectural testimony of historical and environmental importance and is one of the few among numerous buildings of the same type once present in the Plain that is still preserved intact in its entirety.” The rooms on the ground floor formerly used as food storage and stables, were renovated at the end of the last century to accommodate the production and sale of mozzarella di bufala campana DOP and other products made each morning exclusively from the raw milk of buffalo raised on the farm. A yogurteria has also been open since 2013, where yogurt, puddings and ice cream are made from buffalo milk with a creamy texture and delicate flavor. Tours are organized for groups interested in visiting the buffalo farm and witnessing the traditional processing of mozzarella with a tasting of the dairy products.
Guided tour
The guided tour at the Filippo Morese farm includes the following outline program: visit to the livestock center, visit to the Taverna Penta Dairy to witness the traditional processing of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP, tasting of the dairy products (cherries, smoked cherries, buffalo ricotta), all derived from the exclusive processing of the milk of the buffalo raised on the farm. As an alternative to the tasting, we can offer a light lunch. The group can also visit the nearby yogurteria and taste its products. Accompanying the group will be the owner of the farm or his Italian-Swedish wife, Flavia Bergman Acquaviva d’Aragona, who is a tour guide for the Campania Region, and with whom it is also possible to arrange guided tours of the area’s wonderful tourist sites including: Salerno, Paestum, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Herculaneum.
