In 2017, the property was given in concession by the Municipality of Recanati, the National Center for Leopardi Studies and the World Center for Poetry and Culture “Giacomo Leopardi” to FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which wanted to carry out here a project of enhancement and restoration that would relate the two aspects of the Hill of Infinity: the landscape aspect and the philosophical and poetic aspect.
After a long restoration work, entrusted to landscape architect Paolo Pejrone in collaboration with the Municipality of Recanati, the ancient garden-garden of the former Convent of S. Stefano was reopened to the public. Lived in and cared for since the 15th century by the nuns who inhabited it, it is a space historically devoted to recollection and concentration, typical of a convent; particular characteristics that must have attracted Giacomo Leopardi who, in his early twenties, often went to the hill, just a few steps from his birthplace, and who set the famous poem L’Infinito here in 1819.
The Orchard on the Hill of the Infinite adds to the Leopardian itinerary in Recanati another fundamental place, which integrates and completes the knowledge of the author, clearly restoring to the public the complexity of his thought, the sensitivity of his soul, and the conflict of his young life spent between his father’s library and the orchard near his home, the only refuge of solitude and silence, where to suspend reason and free instinct in the sweet and fulfilling experience of the infinite.
A unique cultural enhancement project aimed at recognizing the specific identity and vocation of this place: a “guided tour” inside a poem, an intangible work of art by definition. IlFAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano intends to foster the curiosity and rediscovery of poetry, also a cultural asset to be enhanced, through a visit to the Orto sul Colle dell’Infinito and in general to Leopardi’s places in Recanati.
