Address: Via Cavour, 53, 62019 Recanati (MC)
Commissioned by the Recanatese Cardinal Jacopo Antonio Venieri, a member of the noble 13th-century family, the palace was designed by architect Giuliano da Majano in 1473. The Recanatese community contributed 1,500 gold ducats, securing in return the hospitality of distinguished visitors to the city. The facade and interior were completely transformed in 1729 by architect Pietro Augustoni after the Carradori family purchased the palace. In the 19th century the rooms were decorated by Moretti Francesco Saverio. The inner courtyard still retains the original design, the capitals of the columns bear the coats of arms of the families who owned the palace; an arch-balcony, overlooks the Adriatic coast and when the sky is clear the Dalmatian mountains can be seen; above it stands a clock with the inscription “Volat irreparabile tempus.” Paul III and Pius VII were guests of the palace. The gardens in front, now public and opened in 1936, belonged to the palace and were connected by an underground tunnel.
Today Palazzo Venieri is home to the Giacomo Leopardi High School. It is possible to enter the inner courtyard of the palace and enjoy a splendid panoramic view of the hilly landscape.
