The Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi–founded in 1346–is characterized by an unadorned exterior, with exposed brickwork and a large circular oculus on its axis; framing the main entrance is an elegant portico that wraps with slender marble columns around the entire side of the church. The interior, of late Bolognese Gothic character, is divided into three naves by circular columns alternating with octagonal pillars as supports for pointed arches and cross vaults. The side and radial chapels are rich in works of art. Among to be the chapel of Cimabue, which can be visited thanks to the welcome of the volunteers of the Italian Touring Club, conversed the panel of the Maestà di Santa Maria dei Servi by the artist that presents on a throne – with elaborate wooden turning – the Virgin seated, smiling, with the oval of her face particularly rounded and supporting the Child rendered with affectionate features in his singular gait toward the Mother who helps him by lifting him with her left leg. The drapery of the Majesty’s robe, with thick, swathing folds emphasizing the shape of the knees, and the concentric lines of the mantle defining Mary’s head are significant.
