We recommend checking for updates regarding openings on the Italian Touring Club website
The Basilica of San Giacomo Maggiore, with its proper Renaissance features, was erected by the Augustinians between 1267 and 1343. The Latin-cross plan is characterized by three naves and thirty-five rich chapels; among them the Bentivoglio Chapel, built between 1463 and 1468 by Pagno di Lapo Portigiani da Fiesole, stands out for its majesty.
The chapel, a place that can be visited thanks to the hospitality of Italian Touring Club volunteers, is one of the most significant monuments of the early Renaissance. Under a dome, carefully decorated, a cycle of decorations is expressed that even in the choice of colors aims to pay homage to the great Bentivoglio family. The red marble columns and the splendid majolica tile floor-which bears visible traces of the Bentivoglio coats of arms-to be ascribed to the Della Robbia workshop (1489) enrich the environment and enhance the works housed there. On the walls, the Madonna Enthroned and the Bentivoglio Family, the Triumph of Death and the Triumph of Fame by Lorenzo Costa; on the altarpiece with Madonna Enthroned and Saints John, Sebastian, Augustine and Florian by Francesco Raibolini.
