The Associazione Siciliana Amici della Musica is one of the oldest concert institutions in Italy: founded on June 22, 1925 by the lawyer Vito Trasselli Varvaro, with the aim of “promoting and spreading the cult in Palermo and in the main cities of the island of chamber music, ancient, modern and contemporary and the musical education of the public, as well as the protection of Art and Artists ».
In 1973, the presidency of the Association was assumed by Baron Francesco Agnello, who remained at the helm of the Association until November 2010. During this long period, the Friends of Music have assumed a cultural importance that still places them today among the most important Italian musical institutions. Subsequently, from 8 November 2016, the office of President of the Association was assumed by the lawyer Carmela Milena Mangalaviti and from 3 March 2017 the artistic direction was taken over by Prof. Donatella Sollima. In 2001 the Association celebrated its 3,000th concert, hosting the Berliner Philharmoniker String Sextet at the Golden Theater. In 2015, the Amici della Musica Association celebrated the 90th anniversary of its foundation. On 6 June 2015, the Plaque was received that the President of the Italian Republic, Hon. Sergio Mattarella, wanted to assign to the Friends of Music in Palermo, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary. The Association has several active collaborations: with the Municipality of Palermo, with the Teatro Massimo, with the Cidim of Rome and with the Conservatory of Palermo. It has also started a circuit with some Sicilian associations such as the Etnea Music Association, the Messina Philharmonic Association, the Friends of Music of Trapani and Cefalù. The new course of the Amici della Musica di Palermo has seen the birth of three new initiatives with the aim of bringing Music to an audience that cannot reach the concert halls, and in fact in 2017 the concerts of the Amici delle Musica entered the Department of Care Palliative of the Asp of Palermo, in the Institute of Juvenile Penalty of Palermo and in two of the smaller islands of Sicily, Favignana and Marettimo. During 2018 the Sicilian Amici della Musica Association was included in the institutional billboard of the Municipality of Palermo for the Italian Capital of Culture 2018, confirming the role that it has played over the years and continues to play in the musical and cultural world of our Earth.
