BOTANICAL GARDEN OF PALERMO – Garden Route Italy – Le Dimore del Quartetto

Address: Via Lincoln, 2, 90133 Palermo
Opening hours: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily
The Botanical Garden of the University of Palermo is one of Italy’s most important academic institutions. Considered a huge open-air museum, it boasts over two hundred years of activity that have also enabled it to study and disseminate, in Sicily, Europe and throughout the Mediterranean basin, countless plant species, many originating in tropical and subtropical regions. The peculiarity of this Garden today is represented by the great variety of species housed, making it a place rich in expressions of different floras.
The origin of the Botanical Garden of Palermo dates back to the last decades of the 18th century, a time when a historical phase marked by numerous cultural reforms began in the Kingdom of Sicily. A decisive event was, in 1779, the founding of the Royal Academy of Studies of Palermo, corresponding to today’s University: with the establishment of the Chair of Natural History and Botany, the Academy obtained from the city Senate the power to make use of a modest plot of land to allocate it as a Botanical Garden, to be used for the cultivation of medicinal plants useful for teaching.
