Inaugurated on 20 September 1980, the Museo del Volo is developed in the two wings of the San Pelagio Castle, manor and rustic. Through thematic sections, the museum traces the main stages in the evolution of the means that led man to the discovery of the sky and space.
In the old granaries, cellars and residential rooms of the Zaborra family, stories of mythical flights, visionary scientists, hot air balloons and dirigibles, aeroplanes, seaplanes and space craft are now on display.
In the summer of 1917, the Castle of San Pelagio became a strategic point in the context of the Great War. The Zaborra family signed a lease with the Italian army for the construction of an airfield and the occupation of part of the villa. The flats on the first floor, in particular, became the home of Major Gabriele d’Annunzio. The Rooms, rearranged according to archive sources, are today open to visitors. The Castle of San Pelagio rests in the embrace of a wonderful three-hectare park.
During your visit, you can breathe in the scent of a thousand rose bushes in the Giardino di Rappresentanza, between the two wings of the villa; visit the Giardino Segreto and its treasures; explore the Brolo, the Ghiacciaia, the Labyrinths, and stroll along the avenue of centuries-old hornbeams and around the romantic pond, admiring the original specimens of flying saucers.
