CATHEDRAL OF CREMONA – TCI

Address: Piazza del Comune, 26100, Cremona
We recommend checking for updates regarding openings on the Italian Touring Club website
Dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, the Cathedral of Cremona-an open site thanks to the welcome of Volunteer Members of the Italian Touring Club. It was built in the early 12th century and is one of the principal and most distinguished examples of religious architecture in northern Italy. It dominates the Piazza del Comune, the fulcrum of the ancient medieval city, forming with the Torrazzo and the Baptistery the hub of religious life.
On the original Romanesque construction Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque reworkings have been added over the centuries. Passing through the portal, one enters a room with a monumental appearance both in terms of its size and its prestigious decorative apparatus: in fact, one can admire works by the most important exponents of the Cremonese Renaissance school of painting. Standing out in the center of the cathedral are the organ and the chancel in front of it made to a design by Giulio Campi.
