Address: P.za S. Domenico, 10A, 06034 Foligno
The church of Santa Maria Infraportas overlooks the western side of Piazza San Domenico in the historic centre of Foligno.
The church, documented as a parish church since 1138, was built on the site of an 8th century chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, St Peter and St Paul. With the construction of the Romanesque church in the 12th century, the chapel was incorporated into the left nave. The church, one of the oldest in Foligno, as well as being one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in the Foligno area, is rich in votive decorations of considerable interest.
The white and pink stone façade, with a mullioned window with three-lobed arches that replaced the beautiful original rose window demolished in the 19th century, ends with a triangular tympanum.
The entrance is preceded by a portico with three arches supported by four columns with Romanesque capitals. To the right of the portico is a shrine from 1480 with a fresco, while at the bottom of the right side is the Romanesque bell tower.
