Pizzighettone is a village certified by the Italian Touring Club with the Orange Flag. At the center of the Po Valley, in lush countryside, it is one of the most complete and significant walled towns in Lombardy and links its origins to the Adda River, which still connotes its historic center, dividing it into two parts. Within the Adda Sud Park and along the valley of the Serio Morto, one can enjoy country trails and bicycle paths to discover the area. Not to be missed is the 16th-century city wall that surrounds the entire historic center, on both banks of the Adda River: a defensive complex about 2 km long, with a height of 12 m, a width of 15 m and a wall thickness that reaches an average of 3.60 m. The Casematte, barrel-vaulted rooms within the walls, all interconnected (unique in Europe). The square, crenellated Guado Tower, the only intact vestige of the ancient castle, which in 1525 was the setting for the imprisonment of Francis I of Valois, King of France. Among the town’s typical products are Fasulin de l’oc (Green beans from the eye), to which a major gastronomic marathon is dedicated between October and November in the Casematte, Pizzighettone provolone cheese, Pizzighettone cookies and the walled city’s cured meats.
