Address: piazza S. Spirito, Bergamo
Commissioned from Pietro Isabello in the first half of the 1500s by wealthy merchants who had come to reside in the eastern suburbs, the church remained unfinished with a rusticated facade on which a bronze sculpture from 1972 stands out (the large covering vault was made by G.B. Caniana in 1730-40). In the harmonious interior, the side chapels hold masterpieces of 16th-century painting: in the fourth chapel on the right stands the Madonna Enthroned with Saints and Angels by Lorenzo Lotto (1521), also known as the altarpiece of S. Spirito; in the fifth decorates the altar a polyptych (Madonna and Child, Redeemer and 8 saints) by Andrea Previtali and helpers (1525); in the second chapel on the left are a polyptych (Madonna Enthroned with Apostles, 4 saints, Eternal Father with Angel and Annunciation) by Bergognone (1507) and, in the first, St. John the Baptist and other saints by Andrea Previtali (1515).
