Villa Aureli stands on the remains of Etruscan (6th century BC), Roman and medieval settlements, traces of which are still visible today. Located a few kilometres from Perugia, in the heart of Umbria, it is surrounded by rolling hills adorned with avenues of cypresses and maritime pines.
The present villa dates back to the mid-18th century, when Count Sperello Aureli, of a noble Perugia family, transformed a 16th-century tower into his country residence, adorning it with frescoes, prints, stucco work and furniture that can still be admired today.
During the Second World War, the villa was occupied first by the German army, who made it their local headquarters, and then by the British, Americans, Australians and New Zealanders. Fortunately there was little damage, also because all the precious furniture was walled up in one part of the house by the heroic gardener Adolfo Guelfi.
At the end of the war, Count Leonardo di Serego Alighieri, son of Pieralvise, and his bride Laura Guarienti di Brenzone chose Villa Aureli as their residence, dedicating their lives to the restoration and conservation of the villa and restoring it to its 18th century splendour. The restoration work was continued by their son Sperello, the current owner.
Among the many marvels of the villa are the majolica floors that come from Vietri and are designed room by room following the decorations on the walls, the elegant balustrades in the garden, and the fountain in the shape of a four-leaf clover in front of the orangery where the 60 century-old orange and lemon trees that adorn the garden are placed in winter.
