Villa Barbarigo Pizzoni Ardemani, better known as the Historical Garden of Valsanzibio, built between 1665 and 1696, is an extraordinary example of a fully readable symbolic garden, of a large water garden in complete efficiency and today stands as one of the world’s largest and most intact period gardens.
The monumental complex of Valsanzibio was brought to its present splendour in the second half of the 17th century by the Venetian nobleman Zuane Francesco Barbarigo, who commissioned the project to the Pontifical architect and fountain-maker Luigi Bernini, brother of the celebrated Gian Lorenzo. In fact, the then Cardinal Gregorio Barbarigo, following a solemn vow made by his Father to Our Lord in 1631, wanted the garden of Valsanzibio to be a monumental emblem of the path of perfection that leads man from Error to Truth, from Ignorance to Revelation.
This exceptional example of a Baroque garden consists of more than 60 statues carved in Istrian stone and an equal number of smaller sculptures that are integrated with architecture, streams, waterfalls, fountains, ponds, water features and fishponds, amidst countless trees and shrubs, covering more than 10 hectares. Also within the complex are the boxwood labyrinth, the Hermit’s Cave, the Rabbit Island and the Monument to Time.
